Notes: A common argument by closed-minded climate skeptics is that climate change is not a big deal because the Earth was warmer in the past with higher levels of carbon dioxide.
Below is an excellent rebuttal to this argument by Dr. Katharine Hayhoe. She is atmospheric scientist and associate professor of political science at Texas Tech University, where she is director of the Climate Science Center. She made that statement as the keynote speaker at the 2015 Citizens’ Climate Lobby International Conference in Washington, DC.
Expanded Quote by Katharine Hayhoe:
“We know, if we look back in time, that our carbon dioxide levels have exceeded any experience during human civilization on this planet. And this is really an important point.
One of the common arguments that people make say is that ‘But, oh it has been warmer before and carbon dioxide levels have been warmer before.’
And you can say, ‘Yes, there is a movie out now called Jurassic World. Would you like to go see it?’
That is not the world I want to live in…
The reason we care about climate change is not because we have not seen a warmer world before. Yes, there were dinosaurs and it was warmer. The reason we care is because it has never been that warm while we have been here.
After the polar bear, we are the most vulnerable species on this planet. That’s why we care.”
