On Tuesday, June 25, 2013, Elli Sparks, Director of Field Development for Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL), had a face to face meeting with her congressman, Republican House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor. Elli's meeting was part of the 2013 Citizen Climate Lobby International Conference held annually in Washington, D.C. to lobby members of congress to pass a carbon fee and dividend.
At the end of the meeting Elli looked straight into Cantor's eyes. She then stated,
"We need you to promise us that you won't leave office until Congress has solved the climate crisis."
Elli then vividly recalled Rep. Cantor's reaction:
"He [Cantor] was stunned. If I were to guess, I would say that he expected us to be angry environmentalists. He thought we were going to shake our fists at him, read him the riot act, and wish him out of office. We did not."
At the Atlanta Southeast Regional CCL conference on January 18, 2014, keynote speaker Conservative Republican former Rep. Bob Inglis talked his response of Elli's interaction with Rep. Cantor,
"That was amazing when I read (Ell's quote). That was a showstopper for me. That is why I respect CCL so much. That works! Do you know that is memorable to Eric Cantor!"
Elli interjected, "He was speechless."
Inglis continued, "I was too when I read that. I thought, 'my gosh, what an effective way to talk to him: 'Don't leave congress without getting this done!'
In other words, it is affirming. It saying to him, 'you're great! You can figure this out!'"
Inglis believes it gives Cantor a beautiful thing to shoot for rather than forcing him by guilt to take action.
