Source: Dr. Katharine Hayhoe’s Keynote Address at the June 2015 Citizens’ Climate Lobby Conference and Lobby Day, June 22, 2015, YouTube. The 51:45 minute mark.
During this talk, Dr. Hayhoe advised the Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteers and staff to work together with others to solve climate change in a way that is compatible with our common values. One of her tips:
“Inspire people with practical steps they can do. The number one thing I tell anyone when they ask ‘what can I do?’ is to get out a carbon calculator and measure your carbon footprint.
It’s the number one practical thing we can do. And if we do one thing, social science has shown that we will do more things after that.
Even changing a light blub, as silly as it seems, is enough to change something up here (in our minds) to make us do more.
Not leaving out the fact that if everybody changed one light bulb in every home across America that would be the equivalent of taking a million cars of the road.“
Following the advice of Dr. Hayhoe, Let's all do what we can to change our lightbulbs, measure our carbon footprints, educate otherselves on the best solutions, organize with others, write to our members of Congress & our newspapers, and change the laws so we can reduce the threat of climate change.
